RIDE SCHEDULE FOR 2011
We are going to have a minimum of 6 trail rides again this year.
More if somebody wishes to host one in their area.  We had a good

PROJECTS

This year we are trying something different as the HOPE Riding
Program is currently on hold.   We are going to have a split trail
ride with all proceeds going to St Jude Children's Research Hospital.
They will be the June and July rides.  This is a worthy cause and
they need all the money they can get to find new cures for diseases.
They have made several major breakthroughs and are on the verge of
several cures for certain diseases.

This year we again helped clean-up trails in Chippewa County.  We
collected over a ton of trash from the trails.  We had a cookout
afterwards and Chad brought his guitar out and we had a great time.

We are looking for people for our overnight ride this year at Raco.
If you are interested in coming out Friday night and camp out with
your horse, let me know.  It will be either September or October.

MISCELLANEOUS
I have been asked to put out feelers for a good new home for a 4-yr
old AQHA mare.   Wonderful gaits and would be excellent show horse.
Championship bloodlines.  $2500  call 906-440-3085 or contact myself
and I will get in touch with the seller.

 NEWS
Denise Conroy and her husband own Old Mill Designs Embroidery Shop
in Cedarville.  She does all our jackets, hats, etc., they can do all
you embroidery and screen printing at reasonable prices.

Here are some RIDING RULES for Women Older Than Dirt:

1. We DO NOT need to show up with our hair combed, make up on and
wearing a clean shirt.

2. Moaning, groaning and complaining about aching muscles is
perfectly acceptable, as is taking Motrin (or something stronger)
prior to a ride.

3. Helping someone on or off the horse does not mean the rider is an
invalid. It only means the horse got taller overnight.

4. No one will comment about how big someone's butt looks in a saddle.

5. Everyone will wait, patiently, while someone dismounts and adjusts
equipment. Everyone will also wait, patiently, until that person
remounts and is ready to move on...no matter how long that takes.

6. When a horse is acting up we will accept that the horse is just
having a bad hair day and it is not the rider's fault.

7. Mentioning it is too hot, too dry, too humid, too wet, too buggy,
etc., is considered self expression, not whining.

8. Wanting to be first, last, walk, or just stop does not mean the
rider is a wimp. Sometimes it is necessary to teach a horse who is in
charge.

9. We will take the time to discuss the important issues of the day
like who is dating who, who is cheating on who and any other relevant
information which needs to be passed on.

10. We will acknowledge that horses are very strange animals and
sometimes for no reason at all we fall off of them. If this happens
to any rider the other riders will ascertain that the person is okay
and then not mention the incident to another living soul, especially
husbands and significant others.

11. We will acknowledge, without apology, that riding more than 6
hours increases our grumpy level far more than any ego benefits we
may get from riding longer.

12. Our horses are not fat they are "big boned".

13. I need to keep this MFT riding mysterious and strange sounding.
If everyone else finds out how much fun it is the price of the horses
will go up and I won't be able to afford a dozen of them.

July 2010 NEWSLETTER

Well, I decided to do the Newsletter myself this Month
again.....partly because Rebecca isn't here nor is Sherry.
Thank you to all of you who called, sent letters and cards, or
stopped by with a dish or just to say "HI".  I really appreciated it.
This has been a bummer of a Summer for me as I have not been able to
do much riding.  We had the STR ride this month and it was so much
fun.  I didn't realize how much I missed it.  Thanks to my trail
buddy for staying with me!
SADDLE UP! FOR ST. JUDE TRAIL RIDE

Our next ride is one that I don't want to miss and you don't want to
miss either.  It is our Saddle Up! For St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital.  It will be August 21st .  Several people have inquired if
we will be having it at East Soldier's Lake again this year as they
enjoyed it so much in the past years.    Well, this seems to be the
concensus so it looks like we will be camping at East Soldier's Lake
again this year.

If you need sponsor sheets and receipts, please contact me at
906-632-3638, 906-635-7878 (7:00-3:00 M-F), or email me at
nosborn@nmo.net    There is a minimum of $10.00 to ride (this is the
only ride that we charge every rider) or $35.00 or more to get St.
Jude prizes.  The more you raise, the more prizes you win and the
more sick children win, too.

I will be out there Friday, around 6:30 p.m.  and put up some signs
and streamers.  Remember it is about 22 ½ miles West of I-75 on the
South side of M-28.  It is about 2-3 miles past the Raco Store.  If
you go to Soldier's Lake Campground, turn around and take the first
road to your right.  We are about 1/4 mile back at the bend of the
road.   Friday night we will have a  night ride at dusk and
campfire, and then ride at 10:00 Saturday  morning.  We can take the
horses to East Soldier's Lake for water.  Come and enjoy camping with
your horse and your fellow horse lovers!
We should be loaded up ready to head home around 3-3:30 Saturday.

If you haven't done this before, give me a call and I can tell you
what to bring and what not to bring.  It is really simple.

Other rides scheduled are:
1.      August 21th - Saddle Up! For St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
2.      September 18th
1.      October 16th
These are our regular rides- 3RD Saturday of the month.  All rides
will start at 10:00 a.m.   Member ride free - non-members will pay
$5.00 to ride.  Check our website for news and updates.

Trail Seminar

Several years ago, some people got together and planned a Trail
Seminar and invited people from all different disciplines - biking,
hiking, dog sleds, snowmobiles, cross country runners, etc.- to try
to promote harmony and safety on the trails for all users.   It was a
good beginning and a good way to educate other trail users to the
different disciplines that use the trail.  Outside of dog mushers the
only other people that use animals on the trails are horse people.
Most trail users ride bikes, 4-wheelers, trucks, etc., which they
have control over.  Equine trail riders do not.  Horses have a mind
of their own and only allow us to ride them.  If you have rode on
trails or on the road, you know how ignorant some people can be.
Hopefully, if we can build on the past seminar, we can alleviate some
of it.

I know that some of our membership just want to ride-that is great,
no problem, we love to have you and we need you.  Some of our
membership want to do a little bit more.   Planning trial rides is
easy and fun, but how to pull it off with no accidents is a little
trickier.   By educating riders on how to ride safely and what to
take on a trail ride hopefully we can keep all our trail rides free
from accidents.  Below is a tentative outline for the seminar.  We
hope to bring other people in to do the seminar in their respective
fields.

General Session:      Registration, Coffee, and Donuts
Session 1:   Snowmobiles
Session 2:   Off-road vehicles
Session 3:   Horses
                Introduction                            Ride 'n Tie
                Pleasure Trail Riding                   Getting Started
                Endurance Trail Riding          Conditioning
                Competitive Trail Riding                Veterinary
                Mounted Orienteering Riding     Camping w/Horses
                Trail Safety and Etiquette
Session 4:   Hiking
Session 5:   Biking
Session 6:   Dog Sledding
Session 7:   Cross Country Snowshoeing and Running
Closing Section:

Norma would like about three people to help prepare and help put this
on.  Please contact her and let her know that you are interested.

She is also interested in feed back on this.  Do you think we should
open it up to other trail users or should be keep it horse related?
If it is just for horses only Section 3 will be on the agenda.

Post on our chat site any new foals arrival or comments.  We also
have a section where you can sell your extra tack, riding clothes,
feed, or horses.  To post items on the Classified site, send pictures

PREPARING YOUR HORSE FOR WINTER

Here are tips in four different areas of horse management to help
your horse not only survive, but thrive during cold weather so you
have a healthy and willing partner when warmer temperatures return.
Nutrition
Forage, or hay, should make up the largest portion of your horse's
diet especially in winter. Increasing the amount of hay is the best
way to keep weight on horses when it's cold, as the fermentation
process generates heat. Horses needing more calories can also be fed
fortified grain, fat or other supplement. "Easy keepers" should be
given a ration-balancer or multi-vitamin/mineral supplement to
correct any deficiencies in hay alone.
Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary
Medicine showed that if during cold weather horses have only warm
water available, they will drink a greater volume per day than if
only icy cold water is available. But, if given a choice between warm
and icy water simultaneously, they drink almost exclusively from the
icy and drink less volume than if only warm water is available.
Exercise
Studies have found that muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness and
overall flexibility decrease in horses that have been "let down"
during winter, even if daily turnout is provided. While cold weather
exercise can be challenging, you can improve conditions somewhat.
With your farrier, determine if your horse has best traction with no
shoes, regular shoes, shoes with borium, "snowball" pads, or another
arrangement. Add a binding agent to indoor arenas to hold moisture,
then water as often as temperature will allow. Warm up and cool down
with care, spending twice as much time on each of these than when it
is warmer.
Blanketing
In general, horses with an adequate hair coat, in good flesh, and
with access to shelter don't need to be blanketed. However, horses
that have been clipped, recently transported to a cold climate, or
are thin or sick might need the additional warmth and protection of
outerwear. Since horses' winter coats begin to grow as early as July,
choices for inhibiting hair growth are using artificial lighting to
simulate long days and adding clothing to your horse as soon as it
begins to get chilly.
Health
A number of health conditions seem to be exacerbated by winter
environment. Decrease the risk of impaction colic by providing only
warm water (as described above) and top dressing electrolytes. Ensure
proper ventilation for horses with "heaves" and consider wetting
indoor arenas and aisles as well as hay.  If possible, horses are
better off outside as long as there is adequate shelter in periods of
bad weather.  Provide appropriate medications or supplements to
prevent ulcers and arthritis "flare-ups" during periods of increased
stall-time. Keep horses and their surroundings as clean and dry as
possible to prevent thrush, scratches (pastern dermatitis, a moist
exudative dermatitis affecting horses at the caudal heel and pastern
area), and rain rot (dermatophilosis).
Paying particular attention to your horse's nutrition, exercise,
health, and protection from the elements during winter will help you
have a ready and willing partner come spring.
